East Cobb

Just to the northwest of Atlanta lies East Cobb, and immensely popular community with just over 169,000 people.  Numerous neighborhoods within East Cobb were established early on in the community’s history, just after the Cherokees left, and include Mount Bethel, Shallowford Falls, Sandy Plains, Noonday, and Westoak.  Suburb development began in the 1960s and quickly grew into what would be the second largest city in metro Atlanta, should the local government decide to incorporate.

East Cobb is known for its shopping, family-oriented culture, and notable residents.  Merchant’s Walk, one of the original shopping center’s in the community, is a 367,600 square-foot open air plaza that features numerous retailers, an array of restaurants, and a large movie theatre.  The Avenue East Cobb and Paper Mill Village followed in Merchant’s Walk’s footsteps, both opening to much fanfare and boasting plenty of retail, entertainment, and restaurant spots.  Some of the best schools in the state call East Cobb home, which lends to the family-oriented atmosphere and the large amount of festivals and events held annually.

Notable residents include Chris and Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes, Newt Gingrich, Travis Tritt, Bobby Cox, Alton Brown, Robin Meade, and Johnny Isakson, among others.

Dunwoody

With a population of just over 46,000, Dunwoody is one of the most popular destinations for families and individuals alike.  After incorporating in 2008, Dunwoody set about carving its own niche into the North Atlanta scene and has succeeded in a great way.  The community itself was established in the early 19th century and grew quickly because of the railroad that was built through the middle of town.  The community continued to grow, even after the railroad closed, and by the 1960s the original residents were building suburban homes and setting up shop.

There are numerous popular shopping and dining destinations in Dunwoody, including Perimeter Mall, Perimeter Center, and Dunwoody Village.  Several large companies call Dunwoody home, including InterContinental Hotels Group, Walden Security, Peachford Hospital, and AutoTrader.com.  Dunwoody culture is rich, with plenty of annual festivals and events that keep residents and visitors busy.  The most popular include the Dunwoody 4th of July Parade and Festival, Light Up Dunwoody, and the Dunwoody Arts Festival.

Notable residents include Erin Andrews, Black Lips, Kip Pardue, Ryan Seacrest, and Cindy Wilson of the B 52s.

Sandy Springs

Just north of the Perimeter, Sandy Springs is quickly becoming one of the hottest cities around Atlanta, with a population of around 93,000.  The community was first developed in the 1840s; the first house built is still standing today.  The 1960s saw a housing boom, and when the 1970s hit residents began petitioning for city-hood.  After almost 40 years of discussion, Sandy Springs finally became a city in 2005.

Numerous shopping and dining options are available, mainly on Roswell Road, the main thoroughfare through Sandy Springs.  Annual festival and activities bring both residents and visitors out in droves, including The Sandy Springs Festival, Sandy Springs Artapalooza, and The Annual Chattahoochee River Summer Splash.

Notable residents include Mike Bettes, Todd English, and David Justice.
